Introduction of the CKD EPI equation for calculation of eGFR

By Editor on 1/13/2016
Whenever serum creatinine is requested in an adult, Ontario’s laboratories routinely calculate and report estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) based on the MDRD (Modification of Diet in Renal Disease) equation. Calculation of eGFR in this manner has provided the best routinely-available measure of kidney function. Recently, a modified eGFR equation, the CKD-EPI (Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration) formula, has been developed and endorsed by KDIGO (Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes), the Canadian Society of Nephrology, and the Ontario Renal Network. The community laboratories introduced this change in May, 2015. The IQMH Chemistry Scientific Committee supports the use of the CKD-EPI formula for calculating eGFR in adults. Beginning in 2016, the IQMH analysis worksheets will include calculations for both the MDRD and CKD-EPI equations.
