Discrimination against racialized communities, specifically Black people, is deeply entrenched and normalized in Canadian institutions, policies, and practices and often goes unseen to those who are not affected.

Black History Month has been an opportunity to learn about and understand the many barriers faced by Black Canadians in health care. It has been a time to reflect on how racism and discrimination may contribute to inequalities and what the implications may be for health equity promotion.

Continuing the discussion to highlight not only health disparities but many additional inequities faced by Black Canadians should be recognized beyond Black History Month. Acknowledging the current injustices in Canadian institutions is a step forward in addressing necessary action to be taken for progress toward health equity for Black Canadians.
