Together with our affiliate, Accreditation Canada, IQMH is recognizing National Indigenous History Month throughout June. This month is a time to reflect on the rich history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis across Canada.
National Indigenous History Month is an opportunity for Canadians to learn more about the history of Indigenous Peoples and the traditional land they reside on. Learning about the effects of colonialism, residential schools and other injustices that have impacted Indigenous communities is essential to understanding the past. These injustices have resulted in the loss of Indigenous languages, cultures and traditions.
By understanding the past and present experiences of Indigenous communities, Canadians can begin to take steps towards reconciliation. This involves building strong relationships based on mutual respect, understanding and shared values. Reconciliation also requires listening and learning from Indigenous Peoples, supporting their communities, and taking action to address inequities in areas such as education, health care, and justice.
This month, deepen your understanding by learning about the significance of National Indigenous History Month and discovering which present-day Indigenous communities are around you and the traditional land you reside on.
