May 2–8 2022 — Mental Health Week
The theme of this year's Mental Health Week was empathy. Empathy is a skill that anyone can learn. It is the capacity we share as human beings to step into each other's shoes. To understand where the other is coming from and what they are feeling. To listen hard and refuse to judge. It is also one way to reduce and resolve conflict.
When times are tough, we need to be there for each other - we need to practice empathy. Sometimes the best way to help is to make people feel seen and heard. Get ready to #GetReal about how to help. Before you weigh in, tune in.
June 1–30 — National Indigenous History Month
In 2009, June was declared National Indigenous History Month, following the passing of a unanimous motion in the House of Commons. This month is a time for all Canadians to take time to recognize the rich history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across Canada.
The Canadian Constitution Act, 1982, refers to the Indigenous people of Canada as “Aboriginal Peoples”, which it defines as including First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.
First Nations is a term used to describe Indigenous peoples in Canada who are not Métis or Inuit. For the most part, First Nations people are status or treaty Indians registered with their home reserve, band or community.
Inuit refers to Indigenous peoples of Northern Canada, the word means “people” in Inuktitut. Inuit people have a distinct language and culture. In Canada, they have inhabited communities stretching from the westernmost Arctic to the eastern shores of Newfoundland and Labrador for uncounted generations.
The Métis peoples trace their origins to the fur trade in the Red River Valley. They self-identify as being distinct from other Indigenous people and share a common culture, language, and a shared history and homeland. The blending of traditions from their Indigenous mothers and European fathers has created a rich and unique Métis culture.
Let’s take time to learn, share and exchange knowledge on the richness, resilience and diversity of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Canada.
